“We Are Fireflies shines a light on inter-generational trauma, particularly the impact of hidden sexual violence and surpressed emotions, as an invisible force that shapes our lives. It is a combination of autobigraphical documentary and an expression of the subconscious. I wanted a dreamlike quality to hold the viewer through what is a deliberately fragmented and ambiguous narrative - since that is what trauma is like. The themes touched on in this animation are complex and stigmatised, often misrepresented and misunderstood. I hope this work continues to evoke more understanding of the lived experience, so we might reduce the stigma around addiction and suicide and encourage more people to open up and find help”
